Cenel Loairn
Origins
Cenel Loairn claimed descent from Loarn mac Eirc, said to be a brother of Fergus Mor, the legendary founder of Dal Riata. By the 7th century it controlled Lorn, Mull and neighbouring districts in northern Argyll, with its main stronghold at Dunollie near Oban.
Rule and society
Like other Dal Riatan kindreds it owed naval service and tribute recorded in the Senchus fer nAlban. Its kings competed with Cenel nGabrain for the kingship of all Dal Riata, and in the late 7th and early 8th centuries Ferchar Fota and his son Selbach held that position. Selbach burned Dunollie in 701 and later rebuilt it.
Decline and legacy
Selbach's defeat at sea in 719 and Pictish conquest under Oengus son of Fergus in the 730s broke Cenel Loairn's power. Later Scottish genealogies traced the rulers of the Kingdom of Moray, including Macbeth, to this kindred, though the link is debated.
