Person
Macbeth, King of Scotland
Macbeth, in Gaelic Mac Bethad mac Findlaích, was King of Scotland from 1040 to 1057. Mormaer of Moray, he killed King Duncan I in battle in 1040 and took the throne, ruled securely enough to make a pilgrimage to Rome in 1050, and was killed by Duncan's son Malcolm III at Lumphanan in 1057. Shakespeare's tragedy turned him into a byword for murderous ambition.
