PIDE was the political police of Portugal's Estado Novo. Founded in 1933 as the PVDE, it was renamed PIDE in 1945 and DGS in 1969. It censored, watched and arrested opponents of the regime, used torture and imprisonment without trial, and ran the Tarrafal camp, and it also fought nationalist movements in the African colonies. It was abolished after the Carnation Revolution of 1974.
