Marcelo Caetano

Marcelo Caetano was the prime minister of Portugal from 1968 to 1974, succeeding Antonio Salazar as head of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime. He continued the costly colonial wars in Africa. His government was overthrown by the Carnation Revolution of 1974, after which Portugal granted independence to its African colonies, ending the Portuguese Empire.
