António de Oliveira Salazar

António de Oliveira Salazar was the authoritarian leader of Portugal from 1932 to 1968, heading the Estado Novo regime. He insisted on keeping Portugal's African colonies, treating them as overseas provinces. His refusal to decolonise led to long colonial wars in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea, which contributed to the end of the Portuguese Empire after his regime fell in 1974.
