Ditadura Nacional

1926 CE – 1933 CE · capital Lisbon

The military dictatorship that ended Portugal's First Republic and brought António de Oliveira Salazar to power.

Origins

On 28 May 1926 a military coup launched from Braga by General Manuel Gomes da Costa overthrew the First Portuguese Republic. Within weeks Gomes da Costa was pushed aside by General Óscar Carmona, who became president.

Rule and society

The military regime dissolved parliament, introduced censorship and repressed several revolts. Unable to solve the financial crisis, it appointed the Coimbra economics professor António de Oliveira Salazar as finance minister in 1928, with control over all spending. He balanced the budget and steadily accumulated power, becoming prime minister in 1932.

Decline and legacy

A new constitution, approved by plebiscite in 1933, transformed the military dictatorship into Salazar's civilian, corporatist Estado Novo (Portugal), with Carmona remaining president.
