Brazilian Gold Rush

from 1693 · 17th century

The Brazilian Gold Rush was the large-scale exploitation of gold deposits in Minas Gerais, Brazil, following discoveries in the 1690s, with diamond finds following after 1729. It produced a spectacular revenue surge for the Portuguese crown and funded João V's lavish court. The site treats the reliance on this windfall as part of the story of the Portuguese Empire's decline.
