Institution
Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute
The Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute is a learned society founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1838 to collect documents and write a national history of Brazil. Closely patronised by Emperor Pedro II, who attended hundreds of its sessions, it shaped the official image of the empire's past and published a long-running journal. It still exists and is the oldest institution of its kind in Brazil.
