Lei Áurea

1888 · 19th century · Also known as Golden Law

The Lei Aurea, or Golden Law, was the law of 1888 that abolished slavery in the Brazilian Empire. It was signed by Princess Isabel while acting as regent for her father Pedro II. Abolition without compensation alienated many slaveholding landowners from the monarchy, contributing to the overthrow of the empire in 1889.
