José de Alencar

1829–1877 · 19th century

José de Alencar was a Brazilian novelist, playwright and politician, a leading figure of Brazilian Romanticism. His novels O Guarani (1857) and Iracema (1865) idealised the Indigenous peoples and the founding of Brazil, helping to create a national literature distinct from that of Portugal. He also served as a Conservative deputy and as minister of justice under Pedro II.
