Minas Gerais

Minas Gerais is a region of south-eastern Brazil. The discovery of gold there in the 1690s, followed by diamonds, produced a major revenue boom for the Portuguese Empire in the eighteenth century. The wealth funded the extravagant court of John V and the rebuilding of Lisbon.
