Lisbon
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, on the estuary of the Tagus. It was the centre of the Portuguese Empire, from which fleets sailed to Africa, Asia and Brazil and where imperial trade was concentrated. The Portuguese court left Lisbon for Brazil in 1807 to escape Napoleon's invasion, a move that led eventually to the founding of the Brazilian Empire.
