Napoleon

1769–1821 · 19th century · Also known as Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader who seized power after the French Revolution and ruled as Emperor of the French. His conquests reshaped Europe: he dissolved the Holy Roman Empire, invaded Russia in 1812, and his occupation of Spain helped trigger the collapse of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. His invasion of Portugal drove the Portuguese court to Brazil in 1808, a step towards the Brazilian Empire.
