Rhine

The Rhine is a major river of western Europe that flows from the Alps to the North Sea. Under the Carolingian Empire it served, with the Danube, as a principal commercial artery, and the Saxon Wars were fought against peoples living east of it. It later gave its name to Napoleon's Confederation of the Rhine, which hastened the end of the Holy Roman Empire, and it is also mentioned in the Xiongnu Empire profile in connection with the westward movement of steppe peoples.
