Raurici

300 BCE – 58 BCE (approx.)

Celtic people of the Rhine bend around Basel who joined the Helvetii's failed migration and later saw Rome found Augusta Raurica.

Origins

The Raurici lived along the upper Rhine around the Basel region and in the southern Alsace and Jura. Caesar records them as neighbours and allies of the Helvetii.

Rule and society

Their oppidum on the Münsterhügel in Basel and the earlier open settlement at Basel-Gasfabrik show a wealthy community trading on the Rhine.

Decline and legacy

In 58 BCE they burned their homes and joined the migration of the Helvetii, but after the defeat at Bibracte they were sent back. Around 44 BCE Lucius Munatius Plancus founded the colony of Augusta Raurica (Augst) in their land.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
