Augusta Raurica
Augusta Raurica is a Roman town site at Augst near Basel, Switzerland, on the Rhine. A colony was founded in the land of the Raurici by Lucius Munatius Plancus around 44 BCE, though the town itself grew up under Augustus from about 15 BCE. At its height it had perhaps 10,000 or more inhabitants, with a theatre, temples and baths; after the unrest of the 3rd century the fort of Castrum Rauracense was built at nearby Kaiseraugst.
