Mediomatrici

300 BCE – 51 BCE (approx.) · capital Divodurum

Gallic people of the Moselle valley whose chief town Divodurum became the city of Metz.

Origins

The Mediomatrici held the middle Moselle and Seille valleys in Lorraine. Caesar notes that their territory once reached the Rhine, before Germanic peoples such as the Triboci settled on its left bank.

Rule and society

Little is known of their rulers. Their territory lay on the trade routes linking the Rhône and Saône with the Rhine and the Moselle, and their oppidum at Divodurum controlled the Moselle crossing.

Decline and legacy

They sent five thousand men to relieve Alesia in 52 BCE. Under Rome Divodurum became a major town on the road from Lyon to Trier, known in late antiquity as Mettis after the people, from which comes Metz, later capital of Austrasia.
