Captaincy of Pernambuco

1534 CE – 1821 CE · capital Olinda

Brazil's most successful hereditary captaincy, whose sugar plantations made it the world's leading sugar producer in the late 16th century.

Origins

In 1534 King John III granted Duarte Coelho the captaincy of Pernambuco, which he called Nova Lusitânia, on the northeastern coast of Brazil. Coelho arrived in 1535 and founded Olinda, which became the capital. He fought the Caeté and other indigenous groups and established sugar mills with financing from Lisbon and Antwerp.

Rule and society

Pernambuco prospered on sugar grown on large plantations with mills called engenhos, worked first by enslaved indigenous people and then by enslaved Africans. Olinda and the port of Recife were among the richest towns in the Americas. From 1630 to 1654 the Dutch occupied Pernambuco as Dutch Brazil. Rivalry between Olinda's planters and Recife's merchants led to the War of the Mascates in 1710 and 1711.

Decline and legacy

The crown took direct control in 1654. Pernambuco led the anti-Portuguese Republic of Pernambuco in 1817, and became a province of the Empire of Brazil after independence in 1822. Olinda's historic centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
