Recife

Also known as Mauritsstad

Recife is the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, a port built on islands and peninsulas where several rivers meet the Atlantic. It grew as the harbour of Olinda and became the capital of Dutch Brazil after 1630, when Johan Maurits of Nassau rebuilt it; the first synagogue in the Americas opened there. It was the centre of the republican revolts of 1817 and 1824.
