Rechila

d. 448 · 5th century

Rechila was king of the Suebi in Gallaecia from 438 to 448. After the Vandals left Hispania for Africa, he campaigned south, defeating a Roman force on the Genil, taking Emerita Augusta in 439 and Seville in 441, so that Suebic power extended over much of Lusitania, Baetica and Carthaginiensis. He was the last pagan king of the Suebi; his son and successor Rechiar was a Catholic.
