Latin

Latin is the language of ancient Rome, which spread across the western Mediterranean with Roman rule and became the root of the Romance languages. It remained the language of the Church, learning and administration in medieval Europe, including the Carolingian Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Through Spanish and Portuguese, its descendants became the dominant languages of the Spanish and Portuguese empires and of Latin America.
