Latin League
Origins
The Latin peoples of the plain south of the Tiber shared a language, the cult of Jupiter Latiaris on the Alban Mount and other common sanctuaries from the early Iron Age. By the 6th century BCE they met in council at the grove of Ferentina and dedicated a federal shrine of Diana at Aricia, whose founding a Latin dictator, Egerius Baebius of Tusculum, is said to have led.
Rule and society
The League was a loose association of towns such as Tusculum, Aricia, Lanuvium, Tibur and Praeneste, sometimes led by an elected dictator. Members shared rights of trade and intermarriage with each other. After Rome defeated the Latins at Lake Regillus around 496 BCE, the treaty of Spurius Cassius in 493 BCE made Rome and the League equal partners in defence, and they jointly founded colonies against the Aequi and Volsci.
Decline and legacy
As Rome came to dominate the alliance, the Latins revolted in the Latin War of 340–338 BCE. Rome won, dissolved the League in 338 BCE and made separate treaties with each town. The shared 'Latin rights' survived as a legal status Rome later granted to colonies and provinces.
