Mértola
Mértola is a town in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, on a hill above the Guadiana. As Myrtilis Iulia it was a river port of Roman Lusitania, where in 440 the Suebic king Rechila forced the Roman commander Censorius to surrender. Under Muslim rule it was for a time the capital of a taifa, and its mosque, later converted into a church, survives.
