Kingdom of the Suebi
Origins
The Suebi crossed the Rhine in 406 with the Vandals and Alans and entered Hispania in 409. In 411 they received lands in Gallaecia under their king Hermeric. After the Vandals left for Africa in 429, Rechila expanded south, taking Emerita Augusta in 439 and Seville in 441.
Rule and society
The kingdom was centred on Bracara Augusta and ruled a Hispano-Roman majority through bishops and local elites. Rechiar became the first Catholic Germanic king around 448 and minted silver coins, but was defeated and killed by the Visigoth Theodoric II in 456. The Suebi later turned Arian, then returned to Catholicism under Martin of Braga's influence around 560. The Councils of Braga of 561 and 572 organised the church.
Decline and legacy
King Miro was drawn into Visigothic conflicts and died in 583. In 585 the Visigothic king Leovigild overthrew the usurper Andeca and annexed the kingdom, ending Suebic rule. Its territory shaped the later Kingdom of Galicia.
