War of the Mascates

1710–1711 · 18th century

The War of the Mascates was a conflict in Pernambuco, Brazil, in 1710–1711 between the sugar planters of Olinda and the Portuguese merchants of Recife, whom the planters scorned as mascates, or pedlars. It broke out when Recife, which held the planters' debts, was made a self-governing town. The crown restored order and confirmed Recife's status.
