War of the Mantuan Succession
The War of the Mantuan Succession was fought after the main Gonzaga line died out in 1627. France backed the claim of Charles Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers, to Mantua and Montferrat, while Spain, Savoy and the Holy Roman Emperor opposed him. Imperial troops sacked Mantua in 1630, and the Treaty of Cherasco in 1631 confirmed Nevers as duke.
