Duchy of Mantua

1328 CE – 1708 CE · capital Mantua

The Gonzaga state of Mantua, whose court commissioned Mantegna, Giulio Romano and Monteverdi before war and plague ruined it.

Origins

In 1328 Luigi Gonzaga overthrew the Bonacolsi lords of Mantua and became captain of the people. The Gonzaga ruled as imperial vicars, became marquises in 1433 under Gianfrancesco Gonzaga and dukes in 1530 under Federico II, who also acquired Montferrat, later the Duchy of Montferrat.

Rule and society

Mantua's court was among the most brilliant in Italy. Andrea Mantegna painted the Camera degli Sposi for Ludovico III; Isabella d'Este collected art; Giulio Romano built the Palazzo Te for Federico II. Under Vincenzo I, Monteverdi's Orfeo was staged in 1607. The duchy lived from farming, textiles and the condottiere service of its lords.

Decline and legacy

The main line died out in 1627, and the War of the Mantuan Succession brought an imperial sack in 1630. The Gonzaga-Nevers line ruled until Ferdinando Carlo sided with France and was deposed in 1708, when Austria annexed Mantua.
