c. 1499–1546 · 16th century

Giulio Romano (c. 1499–1546) was an Italian painter and architect, a pupil and leading assistant of Raphael in Rome. From 1524 he worked for Federico II Gonzaga in Mantua, where he designed and decorated the Palazzo Te. His playful breaking of classical rules made him a central figure of Mannerism.
