House of Gonzaga

1328–1708 · 14th century · Also known as Gonzaga dynasty, Gonzaga family

The House of Gonzaga was an Italian princely family that ruled Mantua from 1328 to 1708, first as captains, then as marquesses from 1433 and dukes from 1530. Its branches also held Montferrat, Guastalla, Novellara and, through Louis Gonzaga's marriage to Henriette of Cleves in 1565, the French duchy of Nevers. The family were major patrons of Renaissance artists such as Mantegna and Giulio Romano.
