Kleve

Also known as Cleves

Kleve, known in English as Cleves, is a town in the Lower Rhine region of North Rhine-Westphalia, near the Dutch border. Its Schwanenburg castle was the seat of the counts and, from 1417, dukes of Cleves, whose house also came to hold Mark, Ravenstein and Nevers. In 1521 the duchy was joined with Jülich and Berg, and after the disputed succession of 1609 Cleves passed to Brandenburg-Prussia.
