Duchy of Prussia

1525–1701 · 16th century · Also known as Ducal Prussia

The Duchy of Prussia was the state created in 1525 when Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach, the last Grand Master in Prussia, secularised the Teutonic Order's lands and became their hereditary duke under Polish overlordship. It was the first state to adopt Lutheranism officially. Inherited by the electors of Brandenburg in 1618 and freed from Polish suzerainty in 1657, it became the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701.
