Duchy of Saxe-Coburg

1572–1633; 1680–1699 · 16th century

The Duchy of Saxe-Coburg was an Ernestine Saxon duchy centred on Coburg in Franconia. It first existed under Duke John Casimir until 1633, and was revived in 1680 when the lands of Ernest the Pious were divided among his sons. When its duke Albert died without heirs in 1699, a long dispute followed, and most of Coburg passed to Saxe-Saalfeld, forming Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.
