Duchy of Westphalia

1180–1816 · 12th century

The Duchy of Westphalia was a territory in north-western Germany, centred on the Sauerland and Arnsberg. After the fall of Henry the Lion in 1180 it was granted to the archbishops of Cologne, who ruled it until 1803. It was then given to Hesse-Darmstadt as compensation for lands lost to France, and in 1816 it passed to Prussia.
