Franconia

Franconia is a historical region of southern Germany centred on the valley of the Main, now mostly in northern Bavaria with parts in Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia and Hesse. One of the stem duchies of East Francia, it was dominated in the early 10th century by the Conradines, whose leader became King Conrad I. Later divided among prince-bishoprics, Hohenzollern margraves, counts and free cities, it formed the Franconian Circle of the Holy Roman Empire.
