Bavaria
Bavaria is a region of southern Germany and the country's largest state, with its capital at Munich. Named after the Bavarii, a people first recorded in the 6th century, it was a stem duchy under the Agilolfings and from 1180 was ruled by the Wittelsbach family, who became electors in 1623 and kept power until 1918. Napoleon made it a kingdom in 1806, and it joined the German Empire in 1871.
