Agilolfings

c. 555–788 · 6th century · Also known as Agilolfing dynasty

The Agilolfings were a noble family that ruled the Duchy of Bavaria from about 555 to 788 and also provided kings of the Lombards. Recognised by the Frankish kings from Garibald I onwards, the dukes governed almost as kings, issued the Lex Baiuvariorum and founded bishoprics and monasteries. The last duke, Tassilo III, was deposed by Charlemagne in 788.
