Free imperial city
A free imperial city was a city in the Holy Roman Empire that was subject only to the emperor rather than a territorial prince. Such cities had self-government and representation in the Imperial Diet. Most lost their status in the Napoleonic reorganisation, though a few survived as city-states into the German Empire.
