Free Aceh Movement

1976–2005 · 20th century · Also known as Gerakan Aceh Merdeka

The Free Aceh Movement, Gerakan Aceh Merdeka, was a separatist organisation founded in 1976 by Hasan di Tiro to win independence for Aceh from Indonesia. Its insurgency, met by heavy Indonesian military operations, cost thousands of lives. After the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 devastated Aceh, peace talks led to the Helsinki agreement of August 2005, under which the movement disarmed and Aceh received special autonomy.
