Bremen
Bremen is a port city on the Weser River in northwestern Germany and was a leading member of the Hanseatic League. As a free imperial city it was one of the commercial centres of the Holy Roman Empire. Under the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the Swedish Empire gained the neighbouring duchies of Bremen and Verden, giving it a foothold on the North Sea coast and a seat in the Imperial Diet.
