    First adult baptisms in Zurich launch the Anabaptist movement

    Conrad Grebel, Felix Manz and George Blaurock baptised one another as believing adults in Zurich. Fiercely persecuted, their movement gave rise to the Mennonites, Amish and Hutterites.

  2. 24 February

    Imperial army captures Francis I at the Battle of Pavia

    Charles V's troops routed the French outside Pavia, and King Francis I was taken prisoner. He was released in 1526 only after signing away claims in Italy and Burgundy.

  3. 28 February

    Hernán Cortés executes Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor

    Held captive since the fall of Tenochtitlan, Cuauhtémoc was hanged during Cortés's expedition to Honduras on a charge of conspiracy. He is honoured in Mexico as a symbol of resistance.
