Nguyen Hoang

1525–1613 · 16th century

Nguyen Hoang was the first of the Nguyen lords of southern Vietnam. In 1558, to escape his rivals the Trinh lords, he had himself appointed governor of Thuan Hoa in central Vietnam. He built up an autonomous southern realm, Dang Trong, that expanded at the expense of Champa, and his descendants later founded the Nguyen dynasty, Vietnam's last imperial house.
