Weinsberg massacre

1525 · 16th century · Part of the German Peasants' War

The Weinsberg massacre took place on 16 April 1525, during the German Peasants' War, when a rebel band from the Neckar valley and the Odenwald stormed the town and castle of Weinsberg near Heilbronn. The rebels killed Count Ludwig Helferich of Helfenstein and other nobles by forcing them through a gauntlet of pikes. The killings shocked the nobility, and the Swabian League burned the town in reprisal weeks later.
