Weissenfels

Also known as Weißenfels

Weissenfels is a town on the Saale river in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. From the late seventeenth century it was the residence of the dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels, whose court was known for music and opera. The composer Heinrich Schütz grew up there. After the ducal line died out in 1746 it returned to the Electorate of Saxony, and it passed to Prussia in 1815.
