Swabian League

1488–1534 · 15th century

The Swabian League was an alliance of princes, knights and imperial cities in south-western Germany, founded at Esslingen in 1488 with the backing of Emperor Frederick III to keep the peace and resist Bavarian expansion. Its army expelled Duke Ulrich of Württemberg in 1519 and crushed the Peasants' War in 1525. Religious division ended it in 1534.
