Battle of Morgarten

1315 · 14th century

The Battle of Morgarten was fought on 15 November 1315 near Lake Ägeri, where men of Schwyz and Uri ambushed a Habsburg army under Duke Leopold I of Austria on a narrow path between a steep slope and marshland. The heavily armed knights were routed. The victory secured the independence of the forest cantons, who renewed their alliance at Brunnen weeks later.
