Battle of Mortemer

1054 · 11th century

The Battle of Mortemer was fought in February 1054 in upper Normandy, when forces of Duke William of Normandy surprised and destroyed one of two French armies that King Henry I of France had sent to invade the duchy. The other army withdrew on hearing of the defeat. The victory strengthened William's hold on Normandy against his overlord.
