Château Gaillard

1196–1198 · 12th century

Château Gaillard is a ruined castle above the Seine at Les Andelys in Normandy, built in 1196–1198 by Richard I of England to guard the duchy against Philip II of France. After Richard's death Philip besieged it from 1203 and took it in March 1204, opening the way to Rouen. Its fall ended Angevin rule in Normandy, which passed to the French crown.
