Caen
Caen is a city on the River Orne in Normandy, north-western France. It grew under William the Conqueror, who built its castle and, with his wife Matilda of Flanders, founded the Abbaye aux Hommes and the Abbaye aux Dames in the 1060s; it later housed the Exchequer of Normandy. Its limestone was shipped to England for churches and castles, and much of the city was destroyed in the Battle of Normandy in 1944.
