c. 1028–1087 · 11th century · Also known as William I of England, William of Normandy

William the Conqueror was Duke of Normandy from 1035 and King of England from 1066, after defeating Harold II at Hastings. He crushed English revolts, replaced the Anglo-Saxon elite with Norman lords and created powerful frontier earldoms such as Chester. He ordered the Domesday survey of 1086, and his conquest tied England to France for centuries.
