Domesday Book

1086 · 11th century · Also known as Domesday survey

Domesday Book is the record of the great survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1085 and largely completed in 1086. It lists landholders, manors, resources and taxable values across most of the kingdom, giving an unmatched picture of the land after the Norman Conquest. It also records local customs, including the Welsh laws of Archenfield on the border.
